Northern Gulf Tarpon Collaboration

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is collaborating with the Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group in support of research and conservation of tarpon, tarpon habitats, and the tarpon fishery. The northern Gulf Coast is a critical region along the migration path of this incredible fish, so it only makes sense that local communities and anglers in Alabama and Mississippi become involved. The Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group is supporting the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust’s research efforts on Tarpon along the Alabama – Mississippi Gulf Coasts through data collection, public outreach, logistical support and genetic sampling.

The SWCG will work with local anglers, commercial fishermen, state and federal resource agencies, and concerned citizens to aid in the collection of tarpon catch data, identify juvenile tarpon habitats, and collect genetic samples for the FWRI genetics sampling program. SWCG will also work with BTT to raise funds to support additional tarpon satellite tagging in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
