Permit Regulation Change Proposal in Florida
BTT's efforts to improve the conservation outlook of permit populations in the state of Florida has received more press coverage. Currently, harvesting of permit is not regulated in federal waters and is a year round practice in local regions. BTT is an advocate of regulating further than state waters as well as deeming permit spawning season (April through June) as catch-and-release only. Costa Del Mar Permit Tagging Kickoff
The official kickoff for the Costa Del Mar Permit Tagging Research Program will be during the March Merkin Permit Tournament in Key West on March 15. View tournament details. Permit tagging is a Florida statewide research program and relies on volunteer angling efforts to tag and recapture permit.

Help Research of Juvenile Tarpon
Dr. Jon Shenker, professor at Florida Institute of Technology and long-time BTT scientist, will give a presentation on his research of juvenile tarpon habitats on March 10, 2010, at Ocean Reef, in Key Largo, and will ask for guide and angler help to locate more juvenile tarpon habitats.

SWA Presents Tarpon Migration
Shallow Water Angler TV will broadcast a look at tarpon migration. One of BTT's primary research initiatives is investigating tarpon migration patterns and the show will feature BTT board member Dr. Jerry Ault and his research thus far. SWA is sure to entertain and inform both the hard core angler and casual viewer and airs on SunSports on the Sportsman Channel.

BTT Partnering to Learn Fishing Impact in the Everglades
BTT partnered with the Everglades Foundation to conduct a study of the economic impact of recreational fishing within the Everglades Region ranging from the northern watershed of Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay and the Florida Keys. The study included both freshwater and saltwater fishing activity and focused on angling for bonefish, tarpon and other species over a 12-month period. Click here for the full story. |

Guides & Anglers Participate in a Tarpon Economic Impact Study
BTT was recently awarded a grant from the Everglades Foundation to study the revenue generated from the tarpon fishery in the Charlotte Harbor region. All guides and anglers who fish in the area from Estero Bay to Boca Grande, including the Caloosahatchee River and Charlotte Harbor, are asked to participate. The more people who participate in the survey, the more accurate the information we will gather. Determining the economic value of the fishery will be extremely useful for conservation – for issues like habitat protection and water flows.
