BTU’s work is overseen by an all-volunteer board made up of BTU members and Founders who donate their time to BTU. The board is essential to the long-term success of BTU’s mission, and is made up of people with the skills and knowledge to get this done.

BTU’s staff has a variety of duties, including: design and distribute educational brochures; write and publish regular newsletters that summarize BTU activities for members; maintain the web site; initiate and handle media coverage in magazines and newspapers; and maintain the membership database. Most important, however, is the effort that BTU’s staff puts toward organizing and prioritizing research, education, and conservation needs, and overseeing BTU-funded research programs, and maintaining collaborations with other scientists conducting research on these species. Finally, every two to three years, the board and staff organize and host an international symposium that brings together many of the world’s scientists conducting research on bonefish and tarpon, as well as anglers, to share their research findings and to reassess the status of bonefish and tarpon research and conservation. The symposium is an integral part to the formulation of the Research Framework that helps guide BTU’s research funding efforts.

One of the most important components of BTU’s work is to keep its members updated on the research. We do this through regular newsletters and at numerous presentations by BTU-supported scientists during the year.
