To address the concerns about sustainability of bonefish and tarpon fishery resources, the overall goal of the Bonefish-Tarpon Unlimited science program, led by Dr. Jerry Ault of the University of Miami RSMAS, is focused on issues critical to building sustainable fisheries for bonefish and tarpon, particularly those which develop a better understanding of population dynamics, habitat use, and stock responses to exploitation.
A primary foci has been to document large-scale migration patterns, diel (day-night) movement behaviors, population dynamics, and habitat uses by these amazing game fish. To do so, we are using several state-of-the-art research tagging technologies that are now producing some very exciting results. These new results are yielding huge scientific potential and revolutionizing the way we think about the fish and fishing!
